Hugh J Boswell started business as a Stock Broker and Insurance Broker in a single room near the centre of Norwich in 1906, at the age of 23. In 1934, Hugh was joined by his son John, then aged 22, who was anxious to expand the insurance broking side which was his particular interest. However, the following year found him in sole charge of the business when his father died at the age of 52. The year after, the business was incorporated as a limited company.
After the Second World War, the insurance business expanded rapidly, particularly on the commercial side, resulting in several moves to larger premises. In 1964 the business was purchased by a public company which provided valuable experience in dealing with large corporate risks.
In 1984, the company returned to private ownership, when current Director Mike Minors and recently retired Jim Thomson completed a management buyout, retaining a large proportion of the corporate clients on the books at the time.
In 1991, it was clear that the company needed larger offices and in the following year acquired and renovated the Carrow Hill premises where the company resides today.
In 2013, the business was purchased by existing Directors Nick Chambers, Peter Foster and Ashley Minors.
Today, Hugh J Boswell is still an independently owned business, with 60 employees and offices in Norwich, Bury St Edmunds and London. Our integrity underpins all our client relationships and our experience enables us to offer expert advice that protects our clients in a continually changing environment.
